‘Unbelievable experience’ inspires Future Leaders

By Marie FitzPatrick and Kate Campbell

The 2026 GenAngus Future Leaders Programme proved to be far more than an Angus education for New Zealand participants Marie FitzPatrick (Timperlea Angus) and Kate Campbell. Held at Goonoo Goonoo Station in Tamworth, the week combined leadership, business, genetics and personal development while creating lifelong friendships across the Angus community.

Joining 12 Australian participants from a range of farming enterprises, both agreed the relationships built throughout the week were just as valuable as the programme itself.

“We only spent a week together, but it felt like we’d known each other for years,” Kate said. “The trust and openness within the group made the experience truly special.”

Leadership and mindset formed the backbone of the programme. Pete Clark encouraged participants to adopt a growth mindset, while his message that “consistency trumps intensity” particularly resonated with Marie.

James Jenson challenged the group to lead with clarity and purpose, asking the simple but powerful question, “What is important now?” – a reminder Marie says will help her become more present in both business and family life.

Business development was another major focus. Elliott Connors encouraged participants to establish a clear vision before focusing on financials, while Chad Taylor from Mumblebone Merinos and Angus Australia CEO Scott Wright demonstrated the value of strategic thinking, embracing change and continually learning.

Marketing and communication featured strongly throughout the week, with Zeke Bennett encouraging young breeders to confidently tell their stories through social media and authentic communication.

The programme concluded with visits to Timor Creek Angus and Waverley Angus, where participants saw successful breeding operations putting many of the week’s lessons into practice.

For Kate, Timor Creek’s philosophy that “Cattle are the passion; people are the purpose” summed up the week perfectly.

Both participants also left with mentors through the GenAngus network, ensuring the learning continues beyond the programme.

Reflecting on the experience, Marie said the week challenged her to become a better leader and businessperson.

“It reinforced that success isn’t built in isolation. The people you surround yourself with make all the difference.”

Kate described the programme as life changing.

“I can’t thank Generation Angus, Angus Australia, the organisers, sponsors and everyone involved enough. The biggest lesson I took home is to be open, be present and take every opportunity that comes your way.”

Both encourage other young Angus NZ members to apply.

“It’s difficult to appreciate just how valuable this programme is until you’ve experienced it,” Marie said. “The knowledge, connections and confidence you gain will stay with you long after the week is over.”
